I was attracted by the footwork of Sawako Ariyoshi's “Izumo no Okuni,” which I read a long time ago. I was a 15-year-old member of a rural gymnastics club who did not yet know that dance was a form of stage expression.
Perhaps it was somewhere in the mind of Okuni, who dances while traveling, that I named Mademoiselle Cinema's performance activities “Journey of Dance".
I wondered how many more new works I would be able to create, and I began to think that I would like to embody the steps of Okuni.
I hear that Okuni, whom I know only from Ariyoshi's novels, is the founder of Kabuki.A little more research shows that it is also the ancestor of the ding-dong.
We can not play Kabuki, but I loved ding-dong when I was a kid, walking behind them.
At the beginning of the Edo period, Okuni received the name “Tenka-ichi(best on earth)” and performed under the banner “Tenka-ichi”.
What one woman did in an unfavorable time, doing what she loved without knowing anything about the future, lives on in a culture that is familiar to us today, and continues to fascinate its creators...
The foot beat that we, who live in Tokyo, are now creating is inspired by Mrs. Ariyoshi and is a respect for Okuni and her friends!
